Dr. Nemechek's hypothesis is that the failure of the body to heal itself is because of the failure of the brain and the autonomic nervous system. In the book, he brilliantly and simply explains the mechanisms at play that results in autistic spectrum disorders in children, and chronic conditions in adults - which are often undiagnosable, untreatable, and dismissed by mainstream medicine/doctors. The food-based method laid out by Dr. Nemechek is aimed at treating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) to restore gut microbiota balance and at reversing autonomous nervous dysfunction. It is easy to understand, inexpensive and simple to follow - but it does need constant, dedicated work by parents & patients. 5 months into the protocol, my family has come back from the brink of despair and stepped off the hamster wheel of (treating) chronic illness. This book and the community around the Nemechek Protocol has helped us manage some major issues (food sensitivities, anxiety, anger, tantrums, rage, chronic fatigue, b12 deficiencies and more) which were unresolved by other methods (Biomed, supplements, diets etc) for years. For autism families, this is the single most important resource they'll need to change the course of their lives.
Best money I have spent in a long time. I am a long time biomed Mom, been there, bought it, done it, prayed about it, tried it again biomed Mom. My son regressed when he was 2 years, 4 months and 13 days old. He went from a very bright, normal, early talker, to a profoundly autistic non-verbal, loss of physical skills and ability, wild child in less than a year. He was so bad autism experts told me to institutionalize him. Our life turned upside down and my journey to recover him began. Somethings helped. Many things did not. I had walked away from trying new things when he was 22 years old, choosing to take time to focus on having a disabled adult son, one who really wasn't so badly autistic anymore, but completely non-verbal and physically disabled. Thankfully, someone suggested I read this book. Talk about opening my eyes! I learned things I never knew, never even thought could be our problem. This is an easy, clear book to read. Not hundreds of pages of scientific jargon, but just the facts, highly explained. I chose one more time, to take a risk. I called Dr. Nemechek and had a phone consultation, just to make sure I really understood him, his book, and what I needed to do. Six months later, I have a child, no an adult making progress again. He is babbling, my non-verbal son, is making sounds again after 23 years. He is finding his lost physical skills, making changes toward a more normal life. If I could hand parents just one book, this would be the one. I suggest you read it, read it again with a highlighter in hand, and take notes. Keep it handy to refer to as needed. I know not everything works for everyone, but unless you read the book, understand why this protocol, you will never know, if this could be your key. Biggest plus, covers oh so much more than autism, as you will learn near the back of the book as you read case studies.
I work in the health industry and have read almost every book out there that relates to gut health. There is nothing out there like this one. I have never seen such a clear, concise, and accurate detailing of what happens when we lose gut health. If you have digestive issues, read this book. If you have chronic illness, read this book. And of course, if you have a child who is struggling, for any reason, read this book.
If you have a child that is cognitively impaired, GET THIS BOOK. We began the protocol not expecting much but have seen great strides in our 4 year old daughter. She is now engaging with others and interested in being a part of a group. I believe this may be her ticket to living a more normal life. Thank you Dr. N for restoring hope.
I am blown away by this book. I don't have any children with autism, or any history or experience with autism. But what I do have is Lyme disease and co-infections of Lyme (Bartonella, Babesia, Erlichia). Although I've been on a protocol for Lyme that successfully kills "bugs," some of my symptoms have gotten worse. I realized at some point that my problem isn't Lyme at all. My problem is the damage to my brain caused by Lyme and other traumatic events I've experienced in my life. I didn't know how to address it but now that I've read this book, I do. The bottom line is this: is there some medical mystery you're experiencing that ails you? Have you searched and searched with little to no answers? Has the medical community failed you? Read this book. It may focus on autism but the Protocol and answers apply to 80% of what causes all illness: inflammation of the brain.
We've been on the Nemechek protocol for a few months now. My husband has a Traumatic Brain Injury and my kids are on the spectrum and ADHD for one of them. I admit I was a little skeptical. Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Inulin and Omega 3? That's it? It sounded too simple. But upon reading the book it made sense to decrease inflammation in the brain and rebalance bacteria in the intestines. So basically healing the first and second brain of the body. I didn't see any changes at first but over the months I'm seeing better speech and communication from my younger child. He's also more restless so I've shifted the inulin to mornings. Our transition from summer back to school is usually traumatic. This is the first year where it went smoothly, it was a piece of cake. I was shocked. Did it have anything to do with Nemechek? I suspect so, nothing else has changed. Then for my older Autism/ADHD child I'm seeing less tantrums and meltdowns.As for my husband with A TBI, I haven't noticed any changes. Maybe because he's an adult he needs to be on the other regimen that Dr. Nemechek recommends. But I'll take the improvements to my kids any day. This is the easiest protocol to follow, especially if you've researched other ones such as the GAPS diet. It's worth a try, and there are a couple good Facebook support groups if you have questions.
